Hi

I'm installing ECC6 SR3/ Oracle 10g/ Solaris 10

at the START INSTANCE stage of installation I get the error below.

Hi joshph,

It might be a memory error, increase the SWAP or virtual memory and then restart the installation.

You may try to start the SAP instance manually and then continue your installation

Thanks all

Its not memory or virtual memory. I adjusted this earlier during the installation

When I log in as <sidadm> I can start/stop database and sap instances with command startsap.

The problem now is that the installations has stalled at START INSTANCE stage and no logs are being written to the instalation directory

also, you seem to be using Oracle 10.2.0.1. This version is not supported, upgrade to 10.2.0.4.

how much memory is installed on the server? Have you configured a swap file?

I don't have the file dev_w0 in this directory /usr/sap/Q11/DVEBMGS00/work

I've installed Oracle 10.2.0.1. i was not prompted to apply any database patch in the course of the installation. I went through Check Oracle Patch stage of the instalation without a hitch. However as per your advice, I'm currently downloading Oracle RDBMS patch 10.2.0.4 which I will apply ASAP. My question is , Can I apply the patch at this stage of the instalation ? I only have four stages to go for the installation to complete (see list below)

=> Start Instance

=> ABAP post instalation activities

=> Check DDIC password

=> Run ABAP reports

=> Change default passwords

My memory (8GB) and swap space is sufficient

at the step you are at now, you should wait for Oracle 10.2.0.4.

you are not seeing file dev_w0? This means that the startup fails quite rapidly.

you seem to have problem with shared memory. if you can, I would reboot to see if that helps.

First:

Did you

- create an /etc/project file?

- assign the SAP system and database users to that project in /etc/user_attr?

Second:

The fact that you installed with 10.2.0.1 may have led to corrupt blocks in your database. Since you're at a very early stage of installation I'd uninstall/delete everything, configure the system properly (see above) and then start over with the installation. I suggest you just follow the official installation guide, the facts about database patches and interim patches is in it.

I've downloaded the patch . I do a reinstalation & patch the database at the approriate stage

Thanks to you all

I logged in as <sid>adm & ran command /usr/sap/Q11/SYS/exe/run/startsap all to start the instance. Then i ran sapinst to resume the installation from where it had stalled & it went throught to completion

I'll patch my database shortly

check contents of files dev_w0, dev_disp and dev_ms.

most SAP start errors are caused by database connectivity issues.

Hi,

Check if LISTENER is running and database is up.

1. lsnrctl status (as ora<sid> user)

and

1. R3trans -d (as <sid>adm user)

If R3trans return code is not 0000, then post trans.log.

Hi,

Check whether the DB services and DB are up and running. The issue seems to appear while trying to start up the ABAP instance. For more information, check the DB startup log.
