The JDBC driver issue with lower oracle versions

Hello Experts

We have to design a JDBC scenario where the oracle database version is 11g.But we have other scenarios where the oracle database is of version 8i Currently the JDBC drivers compatible with 8i are being used for those scenarios.But we have to use the driver compatible with the 11g database.Would this driver be backward compatible i.e wheather that would support the lower oracle versions.Please advice.
