TREX details for PLM Search

Hi All,

We are planning toi use TREX for PLM search in PLM 7.0 ..

PLM Master guide says the following

+SAP NetWeaver 7.1 TREX server

You need to install a TREX server to run SAP NetWeaver Enterprise Search with PCV.

For more information, see SAP Note 1249465+

Again the note 1249465 talks about TREX with Embedded search..

Now my query is how can we activate SAP Netweaver Enterprise Search ?

Do we need a TREX 7.1 with embedded search and an SAP Netweaver Enterprise Search , can someone give the difference between these two in simple words

Embedded search enables every SAP Business Suite application to search in a unified way inside its business objects (structured data) and assocciated file attachments (unstructured data). The capabilities of Embedded Search are limited to indexing and searching within a single SAP system.To extend the reach of searches across two or more systems, SAP NetWeaver Enterprise Search is necessary.

SAP NetWeaver Enterprise Search is a search solution providing unified, comprehensive, and secure real-time access to enterprise data and information from within and outside of a company. The search returns both structured data (business objects) and unstructured data (HTML files, presentations, documents) from SAP systems and other search providers, and allows direct access to associated applications and actions.

The SAP NetWeaver Enterprise Search software integrates with SAP NetWeaver and Search and Classification (TREX) and allows users to enter their search requests and receive the search results through a single browser-based user interface (Search UI).

Both require TREX, you can activate the enterprise search by activating the business function ERP_ENTERPRISESEARCH.

Thank you for a detailed reply.. It was really helpful.. few more doubts

We had activated the business function ERP_ENTERPRISESEARCH. Now as you said to run this we need TREX ..

At present we dont have any TREX , so in PLM WUI, the Search Objects windows is throwing ABAP DUMP..

You say "Both (Embedded Search and Enterprise Search) requires TREX" , so does it mean we need two TREX servers?..

or if we install one TREX 7.1 with Embedded search, the issue is solved - with respect to PLM 7.0?
