In simple terms, XI is the SAP Middleware that is used to enable communication between the numerous systems in the customer landscape.

EDI -> Its a standard for communication. Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Data_Interchange

ALE -> Ref: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/b3/4bf60b4bab1343a03c004d2cb3566d/content.htm

ALE or Application Link Enabling ensures a distributed but integrated SAP installation. It comprises the controlled exchange of business messages and consistent data management in loosely-linked SAP application systems.

hi Shabarish,

I do not agree ))

Maybe... he meant ALE - Application Level Events...

this is also integration technology

of course you're right he probably meant

Application Link Enabling but ALE

in my meaning (RFID) will probably become

much more popular with time that the old ALE

Hi Suresh,

ALE (Application Link Enabling) - It is set of configurations done so that two application (SAP R/3 systems) can "talk" to each other.

Whereas EDI (Electronic data interchange) is the way (or technique) by which these two systems can "talk"...as in they will be able to exchange information in a structured manner.

For ex:- you always have a segment called EDI_DC in an IDoc which contains fields which specify who the source and target system are...such kind of information is specific to every IDoc.

Hi sushma,

So according your suggestion ALE is using to shoot the data from SAP to SAP systems where as EDI is for shoot the data from SAP to any or any to SAP. Am i right?

Lakshman.
