What is the diff. between billing and invoice?

Billing documents are dealt in broad sense. The Invoice is one of the Billing documents. All billing documents are not invoices. In billing documents you can find Credit memo, debit memo, Proforma Invoice etc.

There are not a big different in Billing and Invoice.
Both are related to debit account of customer.
In SAP, Billing is the process to rs. from customer account and give the hard copy to customer.
Billing : VF01 and Invoice = Hard Copy.

In general, both billing & invoice are refering the same document type in SAP SD for your info.

BILLING DOCUMENT is the commercial document created for the Billing transaction after the delivery
INVOICE referes to the hard copy of the Billing docment (print) which is sent to the customer for the goods or services he ordered.
