With SAPscript technology, barcodes are only generated by the printers. SAP sends to them special commands (in PDL) that are printer-dependent. SAP provides commands for only a restricted number of printer models. Moreover, for some printers, you will also need a SIMM.
If you know the barcode commands needed by your printer model (look at the printer development manual), you may enter them in SE73 printer barcodes, and in SPAD transaction, using prefix (SBP) and suffix (SBS) printer controls.

Note that SAP has enhanced the concept with smart forms, SAP generates the barcode image, and sends this image to the printer, so it becomes practically printer-independent.
