I have already looked at a few notes that state that you need to have a Windows Application server to do a

DBCON connect to SQL Server

As per these links;

Note 738371 - Creating DBCON multiconnect entries for SQL Server

Is there something I can install on the Iseries that from ABAP you can write directly to a table on a remote

SQL server database?

Nope, there's nothing you can install.

To connect to a MS SQL Server via DBCON you need to have an application server running on Windows.
