Hi,

BR0218E Checking label on volume in device /dev/rmt/0mn failed

I think tape media was not initialized before taking backup.

Can you try first initializing the tape and then perform the backup again...

If got failed post the fresh log...

Regards.

Hi,

to display the actual label on the tape execute

brbackup -i show

Since your log shows 650 blocks being retrieved upon the label check,

I have my doubts that the file on position 1 will be the header.

So something does a rewind in between (cron?)

Start small.

Do a backup without redologs first, so only brbackup is involved.

If this is working, try brarchive alone without brbackup.

If this works as well, your fine with hardware !

The problem will be in brbackup to brarchive comunication then,

so a current patchlevel of DBATOOLS might help.

What is the head of brarchive-log like? Anything to see, if may be

a rewind is issued at the begin (which would be faulty, if

started by brbackup with the append option).

Hi Kumar,

I have the same error as you did, when i tried to whole backup my system.

And you said that the real problem for this error is the tape.

Can you explain it in more detail?

Are brbackup and brarchive at different runs and different tapes?

And all runs of brbackup succeed, all runs of brarchive fail?

You might want to try with new tapes for brarchive.

tape_use_count = 300 is a bit high imho.

regards

Hello,

parameter tape_use_count by itself doesn't matter. What does matter is: How often are tapes used? You know, the more often, the more possible damages. So I would try new ones now.

tape_use_count = 300 (or 100) only means: You will get a warning if tapes are used more than 300 (or 100) times.

And what happens if you insert one of the offending tapes, rewind it, and try:

cpio -iuvB .tape.hdr0 < /dev/rmt/0mn

Is there a file .tape.hdr in the current directory, and what is in it? (Should be a text file.)

regard

PS:

The counter how often a tape has been used is stored in file .tape.hdr.

But afaik the counter is reset to 0 whenever you initialize a tape.

So probably in your case tape_use_count doesn't mean anything at all.

But do you (or your colleagues) remember how often the tapes have actually been used?

Dear Joe,

I dont know how many times tape used. But i have tried with 2 different tapes. both having same issue.

my customer using 30 labels for entire month. parameter :expir_period = 0 using.

is there any chance for permission issue?..

there is backup data and logfiles while rewinding the tape. in that time only its getting error.

Hello,

a few more ideas before going home:

I don't think 2 different tapes will be a proof...

I suppose you did try a cleaning tape?

Permission issue? Hmm... maybe.

Check if there is a file .tape.hdr anywhere on your system. If so, delete it.

Make sure you run brbackup and brarchive as user ora<sid>. s-bit correct for programs brbackup and brarchive?

Write permissions in /oracle/VRD/sapreorg ?

For further testing you could try brbackup and brarchive in two separate runs.

Hi Joe,

ya I checked for the file permission.. I gave 775 too :).

i dont know where can i find .tape.hdr.. should I check in OS level or in tape?..

i will try with 2 diff backup also...

Please share in case if u have any other option..

Hi,

I agree with Joe..

What he is suggesting, is to actually check the BRtools permissions as per the below note.

[113747 - Permissions for DBA tools BRTools and SAPDBA.pdf|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/113747]

Carefully check the permissions as mentioned in note. Specially "s-bit".

Also see the result after changing parmeter to "expir_period = 30" in init<SID>.sap. (I know, it is not really the cause..)

Regards.
