Can a batch search strategy be performed at order entry AND during backorder processing that duplicates the batch search strategy performed on the delivery.

Thanks for your reply- but please clarify if you are saying that the batch search strategy used for Sales order/ backorder can be used for delivery as well

Yes if you do the following:
1) You defined Sales and Distribution Strategy Types and set up a Sales and Distribution Search Procedure .
2) Using IMG step Allocate SD Search Procedure/Activate Check, you have assigned batch search procedures to the individual combinations of Sales area and sales document type for which batch determination is to occur, and activated the batch check.
Steps 1 and 2 are from the Batch Management area of IMG.
3) In the Delivery type config, you used the order type in step 1 as the default order type.

You can turn on batch search for sales order items (Item cats):

Logistics - General/Batch Management/Batch Determination and Batch Check/Activate Automatic Batch Determination in SD/Automatic Batch Determination for Sales Order Items
With regard to Back Orders, whatever you do for sales order items should be applicable to back orders also, I am not aware of any different behavior for back orders.
