What was it like in 1999

I have only been at Red Hat for ~9 years now and at the time that Red Hat Linux6 was getting certified for SAP business applications I was at DEC worrying about getting SleS up and running on the big Alpha NUMA "Wildfire" machines.

Someone asked me today, "when was Red Hat ported to the SAP application suite?"...I had a hard time answering a question framed in such a way but it did get me started thinking what may have been going on in 1999 to get Linux set up to be a certified platform for SAP business applications.

Does anyone have some data to share what it took to get SAP business applications up and running on Linux way back when?

Was is a "simple re-compile" from code that was built for UNIX?

Thanks in advance

I remember that our first testsystem on Linux was a 4.5B, this was around 1999 indeed. Around 2000 we completely migrated off Windows to Linux.
