Difference between external activity and material component purchasing

Hi experts,

I am confused about external activity purchasing and material component purchasing. I am sure that the material component purchasing used to purchase shortage materials,but I don't know what functions the ext. activity purchasing do.Could you please help to explain these two purchasing's differences?

External activity purchasing is to procure any services(design, project management etc.) you are going to buy from external service providers. If you maintain an activity as external activity, it asks for information such as supplier, price etc. When you enter all this information, system automatically creates PR which can be either service PR( if you have neter service details) or text PR ( non-material).
