How do multiple hierarchies affect performance?

We have 15 members in our product dimension and currently have two hierarchies that utilize all members. We would like to set up several more hierarchies, each of which only use two dimension members:

H3: Product A

Product B

H4: Product A

Product C

H5: Product A

Product D

Do alternate hierarchies have a significant negative affect on performance? Are there other impacts we should consider?

Hi Barb,

Yes, alternate hierarchies can adversely affect performance. The actual impact though will be unique to each system, so you should test it in a QA environment to see if the impact is acceptable or even noticeable. It is discussed in the guide available here: [LINK|http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/BPX/EnterprisePerformanceManagement%28EPM%29How-to+Guides].

The guide is called "Business Planning and Consolidation 5.x Performance Tuning Guide".

Thanks,

Scott

Hi,

You have to take in consideration that each new hierarchy it is like a new dimension in the cube and increasing the size of the cube. Ad additional point here are dimension formula, this also affecting a lot performances(you have avoid as possible).

Having only 15 memebers in dimension, it not like like a big dimension, so maybe you will not have a big impact of multiple hierarchies. For sure you have to test because it is really depending by all the applicatin design and bussiness process.

Hope this can help you,

Mihaela
