Exchange profile is used to maintain parameters for various components of XI to accomplish the communication. Here paramters for various components means let say Adapter Engine.
In exchange profile u will get a node for adapter engine. In which, various parameters like URL for adapter engine, user(service user) and its password will be maintained.
At runtime, whenever it will require to access the adapter engine, it will come to exchange profile and take the maintained parameters. Using these parameters, adapter engine will be accesses.
Likewise, u will get the nodes for sld, integration repository and directory.
Hope, Its clear now.

Hi Srini,
You can navigate to see the exchange profile in PI from integration builder page-> administration->exchange Profile.
If you expand the exchange profile you can see different parameters maintained against each components of PI.
so exchange Profile is a set of parameters which are used for the complete functioning of PI components.
Please make sure you don't play with the setting without having a proper knowledge of impact of the changes.
Generally we add a parameter If we want to implement any ABAP mapping , other than that i think a developer need not
change anything in exchange Profile.
Most of the parameters are initialized at the time of installation of PI but the system administrator need to maintain them.
