MM item categories have a limited scope; they are used to determine the nature of the material, Eg if the material is a service (D), stock transport (U) etc. It helps in determining the follow on procedure and material document creation. These are represented by a single character.

SD item categories have a larger scope: they determine the nature of the stock, if it is billing relevant, if it is delivery relevant etc. Check the configuration of the SD item categories in TCode VOV7. These are represented by 4 characters, and are often customized to meet different business requirements. There is a much larger flexibility with item categories in SD. The item category is determined using factors like item category group and item category usage.

Hope this helps.

I was asked this question in an interview and gave the answer almost similar to it. But the interviewer seems to be not much pleased with the answer.

May be he was looking at from business process angle.

My MM side answer on item category was ok as it is easy to visualize the meaning.

Can more light be thrown on SD item category?
