thank you for your reply: we thought so; the problem we have is the following:
we set a while ago, that all new PO will be automatically printed when saved (message is generated) and any change in a PO will NOT generate a message.
all of a sudden we find ourselves with a message being generated also when the PO is changed and we do not seem to find the reason for it.
any idea?

it could be due to print operation 2 already there with your message type. Check in the above mentioned link whether the current message type used in create mode has this indicator 2.
check one more thing for that message type ,it must be activated for multiple output .Check in NACE transaction and app area EF and clcik mesage type and double click on your mesafe type
You have to maintain condition records MN04 or in NACE .
For change PO ,you can have different output type and assign print operation 2 in the following menu path
OLME -- >messages -- >output control -->message types -->Define message type PO -->Fine tuned control PO
maintain condition records and dispatch tome - 3

Reason could be
a) print operation 2 might be maintianed for your message type . 2 means when PO changed ,it can also get printed.
solution:
Remove this indicator 2 for your message type. Then iyou cant output when you cahnge the PO.
menu path:
OLME -- >messages -- >output control -->message types -->Define message type PO -->Fine tuned control PO
hope it clear
