I'm pretty sure I read in in this forum (darned if I can find it) that you should install Visual Studio first and then install Crystal, so that Crystal can get its hooks into VS. Is that correct? We are using CR 2008 and VS 2005.

That is correct. If CR does not find .NET, it will not install the CR assemblies for .NET, etc., etc.
