Hello,
We have been asked to help in applying support packs accross our SAP enviornment. We are currently running
ECC, BI, SRM, PI/XI, solman (and portals, but thats just Java).
I have in the past implemented support packs, however, its been a while. I took a look at the systems to see whats in SPAM (current release), and
have found a TON of components listed there:
i.e. in our ECC6 system, they have, SAP_ABA, SAP_BASIS, SAP_BW, SAP_AP, SAP_APPL (which I belive are the ones we need)... they also have a lot of
components listed (such as: EA-IPPE, EA-FINSERV, EA-PS, IS-M, IS-OIL, LSOFE, and so on... the list goes on (about 40 components). Some components (such
as SAP_BW are listed in SPAM... even though its a ECC6 system (not bi).
My questions are:
1. Is there a way that I could determine what we acctually need?
2. What are the minimum components we need to update?
3. Do we also update SAP_BI in ECC, or XI (these are listed in spam)?
4. Are there any dependancies? i.e. should we update j2ee w/ any support stacks we update? or are there any components that
need to be updated (I know we do spam/saint), but Im still not able to find a step by step guide...
This will be the first time we run this since our upgraid, so any tips and help would be appriciated.
Thank you everyone!
Richard
All those questions are answered by a single answer.
Support Packages come in Stacks... When updating a system look for the latest stack that will tell you what SP level you have to download for each component. Actually in the download area of SAP Marketplace It will ask you whats your source stack and your target stack and it will create a list. This can also be done via Mainteinance Optimizer in Solution Manager.

Hi, and thank you!
I see on our system (for example our ECC6 server), that we are running SAP_ABA and SAP_BASIS are on 15, SAP_AP SAP_APPL is on 12, SAP_HR is on 29.
Is there an easy way to determine what support stack we are currently on?
Also, I see a few options in marketpace when it comes to downloading these. Which one is the most current:
We are running ECC6, I belive it use to be known as ERP2006... Is SAP now calling this product "SAP ERP 6.0"?
Anyhow, I see support packs for SAP ERP 6.0, SAP EHP4 for SAP ERP 6.0, etc... which is the most current? Do support packs, and Enhancement packs mean
the same thing, or is there a big difference? Do we need to import both support stacks, and EHP? From what I see in marketplace, it looks like
EHP4 is the most current.. for ECC6, and support stack 17... is that correct?
Thanks guys.. any help sheading light on these issues is greatly appriciated.

Hi Richard,
Is there an easy way to determine what support stack we are currently on?
To answer the above question,
From any SAP screen go to sytem->status and click on the magnifying glass button just below
component version, under system data.
This should give the list of componets and their support pack level.
In service market place, for ECC 6, follow the below path to find the necessary support packs,
My Company's Application Components->SAP ERP->SAP ERP 6.0->Entry by Component->SAP ECC Server
EHP4 is the latest enhancement package, however the support pack level is higher than 17.
For example for basis component, it is currently at 21.
An Enhancement package is different from support pack

See if the above links help you.

Thank you vishnuarigela,
That was very helpful. The only thing I still want to make sure I understand what "stack" level I am currently on. I have seen the component versions (system status), and spam gives you the same info.. however.. each component seems to be on various versions. i.e. SAP_BASIS=15, SAP_APPL=12, EA-HR=29.
These would have been imported as stacks right? so, seeing I have various levels 15, 12, 29, I'm still not sure what support stack we are on... - do I just look at the SAP_BASIS level, and know that is my stack level?
Thanks again big time for your help!
Richard
Hi,
A stack level cannot be displayed because, technically, it does not exist. It is just a group of support packages tested together by SAP and so, known to be compatible. You have to ask the Basis guys who applied the last SP if they fapplied the SP from a stack level.
Even with SOLMAN, the science to apply SAP Support Packages has now more to do with voodoo...
I don't know how SAP newcomers can understand all this complexity !
Each time, I ask questions about patching to SAP employees, they all answer that it is very easy.
When I ask them to actually show me where and what to download, it suddenly becomes much more difficult....
Regards,
Olivier
To be fairly honest with you... I use the basis patch as an initial reference so check stack 15 info at SAP marketplace and see if it matches your current support packs... if it doesn't it will give you a fairly good idea if you are above or below that until you find it... theres always a possibility that you won't be in an exact stack level and certain components could be above or below. In that case just get the closest you can and download the "renegade" component SP's manually..
As Olivier said this is not an exact science but more a learned behaviour (unfortunately)

Hello,
It's not necessary that your system is perfectly on certain support package stack level. After you import the whole SPs, from time to time, you need to import support packages for individual support packages for fixes.
But when you plan to do a systemetic SP upgrade, it's recommended by SAP that you import the support package stack. This is a group of teset support packages that work together correctly.

Joseph
