HA: CI vs DI

Hi,

in a HA enviroment based on NW04S, with new ASCS istance (that should be Enq. + msg server)... I dont' understand the real difference from CI and DI.... if CI is not "clustered"... it should be same as DI.... are there other difference in J2EE and ABAP?

CI refers to central installation mode, which means this single standalone instance contains all components needed for running a SAP system. CI = enqueue server + message server + dispatch + work processes(DIA, BGD, UPD, UP2, ENQ).

In HA environment, this all in one instance is broken down to several components running separately for covering each SPOF. Like you mention, ASCS consists of enqueue server and message server, they're SPOFs since there can be only one of each in a SAP SID system. Besides, each additional dialog instance represents one dispatch and several work processes, are not SPOF.
