How could I run defrag on MS SQL 2005 database files. tried to find in within SQL management studio but did not find it. Can I run it online. Does it take a long time on VMWare machine with 178G
Hi,
*Can I run it online.*
Yes.
Does it take a long time on VMWare machine with 178G
It depends on the resource allocated for DB machine.
If you are facing any performance issues due to I/O operations then and then only perform DB Reorganization (De fragmentation).Look at this SAP Note 159316 - Reorganizing tables on SQL Server SQL 2000/2005
Also, Have you refereed this useful link [Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Index Defragmentation Best Practices|http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/maintain/ss2kidbp.mspx] ? The same things are applicable for SQL Server 2005. It is describing when u will required to do Reorganization.

Any reason why you want to do that?
