TECHNICAL UPGRADE
This is purely SAP version upgrade done by Basis Consultants. In your case it's from 4.6C to 4.7EE. Large part of work has to be done by basis where as Functional consultants has to do below.
- Create test scripts for all scenarios in the business.
- Carry out testing in each test lab and ensure all scenario's can execute without any issue.
- Where ever you get a error in the test lab, search for OSS notes, and apply if relevant and ensure system is consistent.
- Test Lab's are normally goes from 1 to 3. So during first test lab you can get lot of issue. You have to correct those then and there during testing. Keep a record of each change you did. It can be configuration, it can be note, etc. In the test lab 2, you'll repeat same test scripts you used in Lab 1. Ideally you should not get any error, issues which came in Lab 1. (As you already corrected and transported to Lab 2 before testing)
- Lab 3 testing should be very smooth. If all labs are went well, then you do the technical upgrade for Production system. Now you know all issues that can come. So you can act accordingly.
FUNCTIONAL UPGRADE
This is purely do with functional consulting. It's like customer is asking for set of new functionalities to be enabled in the system. So it's more with functional consultants. You have to get the requirement, if directly available in the version, configure it do testing, user testing, then transport to production, sign off.
Most of the customers go for this as soon as they do a technical upgrade. Because SAP comes with new set of functinalities in each release.
