Hi everyone,
we're planning on upgrading our existing MaxDB installation to v7.7. Currently we're on version 7.6. The problem is the independent program path (/sapdb/programs) is mounted and used on many different hosts. If I upgrade a database how will the other databases on other hosts, but with the same /sapdb/programs react? Do i have to shut all databases down (this would mean a major downtime to almost all of our SAP systems) or can i just leave them running, as they have their own kernel anyway. Maybe just restart the x_server,dbanalyzer,etc. (binaries in /sapdb/programs) manually afterwards? Any suggestions or advice?
Thanks in advance,
Michael
Well - if you have only one copy of the kernel all databases will be/must be updated.

Hello Markus,
I guess you misunderstood my question. Each database does have its own kernel in /sapdb/<SID>, but /sapdb/programs and /sapdb/data are used globally and are available in every host, so we can start any database on any host (pretty similar to an FSC FlexFrame, if this helps). So for example the x_server and the dbanalyzer are affected by the upgrade. The question is does this affect the other running databases on different hosts?
Best regards,
Michael

The x_server/vserver is used to connect to the database (if not running locally). Each workprocess has also an open file handle to /sapdb/programs/lib/libSQL* files (the database client).
So conclusively you'd need to shut down all workprocesses to update files in /sapdb/programs

Hi everyone,
I need to bring this old post back to life again, hoping to get the same competent help like the last time.
The scenario is still pretty much the same, but this time we're planning to upgrade our MaxDB to 7.8. If I got things right (according to this document: http://maxdb.sap.com/training/expert_sessions/SAP_MaxDB_New_Features_in_Version_78.pdf) MaxDB 7.8 does not require a global program path anymore. So upgrading a database to 7.8 when the highest version so far in our landscape is 7.7. would not require a shutdown of every other database instance, right?
Best regards,
Michael
