MDM for Item Variants

Dear Experts,

We are a furniture mfg firm and implementing SAP...We plan to model all our various products as Item variants. For example a chair can have various variants based on colour, type of base, with/without castors etc....

Our legacy system used to millions of SKUs but we are planning to trim it down to items and their few thousand variants...

1) Can we use SAP MDM for the initial setup of variants/BOMs and Routings?

2) We do not plan to import any of the legacy data but rather start from a clean slate.....Instead our marketing website is driven by a catalog---will SAP MDM help us in importing that catalog as variants into SAP for the cutover and go-live?

Yes. With tuples data types we can now eassily model BOM and Routings in MDM 7.1

If I understood correctly the requirement is to use MDM for data cleansing and as Staging repository. You first load data(consolidate) in MDM, apply the de dup checks and then distribute(harmonization) clean data from MDM to SAP during cutover. This is a very common MDM scenario and can be achieved.
