Installing MSSQL Server 2008 - which Instance to select

Former Member

I have to install new system on Windows Server 2008 R1.

At first I would like to install MSSQL Server 2008 and I have came to select instance like this ...

Figure 3: Select SQL Server 2008 Instance Window

==> To install a Default Instance, (default) choose OK.

We recommend you to install a default instance.

==> To install a Named Instance, enter the <SID> and choose OK.

==> To install the SQL Server Client Tools only software for monitoring your SAP system, choose Cancel.

If I select the first one (it's recommended), I got this error {-2068578304} .... Is it something wrong with my log on user.

I log on as a domain user.

If I select the third one, It comes to the end.

I would like to one, if the third choose is enough or should I select the first one and to solve the error?

Thank you,

mirko

Hi,

Are you executing SQL4SAP.VBS for the installation of SQL Server 2008 ? Required .NET Framework 3.5 is installed on the Host ? The User used for the installation should be a member of ADMINISTRATOR group.

Please refer this Installation Guide "[Upgrade to and Installation of SQL Server 2008 in an SAP Environment|https://websmp105.sap-ag.de/~sapdownload/011000358700001997202008E/sql2008_upgrade.pdf]" to get more detailed information.

Also refer this useful [SAP Note 1152240 - Setting Up Microsoft SQL Server 2008|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1152240].

Thank you for helping me ....

I add my domain user to Administrators group, but doesn't work.

I just saw the difference between my screen

*************************

Authentication: Windows only

*************************

and the screen from pdf file guide

*************************

Authentication: SQL Server and Windows

*************************

Could be this the problem?

I read also System configuration check report and I got this warning

The Windows Firewall is enabled. Make sure the appropriate ports are open to enable remote access. See the rules documentation at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=94001 for information about ports to open for each feature.

You should go with "default instance" as recommended in installation guide for SQL 2005 and 2008.

> NOTE

>Since the configuration of SQL Server is easier to handle, we recommend that you install a Default instance.

>If you want to install a Named instance, enter the <SAPSID> in the Named instance field.
