Localhost as SMTP Server

Hi Everyone,

What is the implication if Mail Host is set to local host for SMTP Connection in the SCOT configuration on SMTP node? Is it still possible to send emails from SAP to external email addresses?

Based on previous experience, there is a mail server, normally an exchange server, already in place that is set as the mail host during configuration in SCOT. Then, the address area should be ensure to be set to "*" so that emails from SAP can be sent to any external email address without any restrictions.

I'm not sure how different it would be if no exchange server is in place. Can SAP still send out emails externally without restrictions?

I hope some can help. Thanks!

No, without an SMTP server you cannot send them.

SAP users SMTP to send mails to your Exchange Server (or any other mail software), also you need to use the Relay Agent because SAP does not handle SMTP Authentication.

Is it possible to configure the localhost (the SAP server) to be the SMTP server? If not, is it possible to do it on a separate machine? Or is it necessary to subscribe to an exhange server provider?

SAP system does not have that funtionallity and require a third party software (MS Exchange, Lotus, etc...)to handle the mails via SMTP requests.

Most companies have a whole mail infrastructure that you can avail of but if thats not the case then you'll need to install and configure a mail server. You can install that mail server wherever you want thats your prerogative.
