I need to understand the following.
1) What is the purpose of t code VBOF. Pls can some explain in detail with help of an example.
2) There is a concept of rebate index tables. What is this concept, what they do and under what circumstances they are used.an example would bring more clarity

1) What is the purpose of t code VBOF. Pls can some explain in detail with help of an example.
As others have explained above, VBOF is used to update the billing documents in the rebate agreement whenever the rebate are created retroactively.
2) There is a concept of rebate index tables. What is this concept, what they do and under what circumstances they are used.an example would bring more clarity
These are the structures by activating which the VBOF transaction runs successfully. Supposse, if you are using the standard rebate processing then, the strucure S136 needs to be activated in t code OMO1. If you are using Extended rebate processing then, you need to activate the structure S436 and so on.

Hi
If suppose after created few billing documents for the particular customer , then your business people decides to give the rebate discount .
So the business needs to apply the rebate discount to those billing documents which were created few billing documents earlier.
With the help of VBOF Tcode we can update the reabte discount to those billing documents.
