unmount transports

I am a new bee and could you please explain the meaning of "unmount transports" ? Why we do it ?

Theres no such concept... transports are not mounted but imported and theres no way to reverse a transport other than importing the correct data again or sometimes using version management depending on the contents of the request.

The above thread talks about unmounting the trans directory. But is there any time we perform this task during system downtime ?

In every prod system downtime we are having this "unmount tranpsrts" task.

You have a concept problem.... "mounting" the transport directory means creating a mount point for a filesystem, basically the same way that shares exist in Windows.

I simply cannot understand why would anyone call for a production system downtime to unmount the transport directory... without the mount TMS would not work
