Hello All,
We would like to upload around 1000+ Japanese users in PPOMA using USERS_GEN (upload from file option). The first and last name for these users are to be in Kanji Characters. The problem with the CSV file is that it does not recognise the KANJI characters and the first and last names get replaced with ?? in the CSV file after saving it.
So when we upload the first and last names in PPOMA would appear as ??
Has anyone encountered this problem? Can you propose a possible solution ?
Regards,
Subbu
Hi,
Please check file encoding of the CSV file. Please test with UTF-8 encoding.

Hi,
It depends on what kind of editor do you use.
Please open the CSV with microsoft notepad. Do you see any Charactor Encoding when you select File -> Save As... ?
I usually edit the CSV in Excel (Encoding is Shift_JIS) then convert the CSV(Shift_JIS) to CSV(UTF-8) in Unicode Editor.
I use free Unicode editor called "Sakura".

Masa
Hi,
The issue is the CSV file is "Shift_JIS" encoding. You have to save the CSV as UTF-8 encoding.
Please ask the person who edited Japanese text to save the CSV file as UTF-8.
Open the Japanese Microsoft Notepad editor. Select File -> Save As.., Select characterset UTF-8.
or
You can find free Unicode text editor and save the CSV as UTF-8.

Masa
Hello Masa,
Thanks for the excellent inputs. I followed the porcedure below as per your inputs:

- I opened this file with my Unicode editor
- I replaced the tab seperators with semicolons ;

And it worked !!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot.

Hi Subbu,
I have also faced similar error with excel. In my case when I opened a CSV file into excel and then save the same, the Japanese characters got converted into junk characters ??. The way out to this is to open the file in Notepad and save it as Unicode text.

Saumya
