*Current Architecture:*
SAP Web Dispatcher---> Application Server 1
SAP Web Dispatcher ---> Application Server 2
SAP Web Dispatcher ---> Application Server 3
SAP Web Dispatcher [ For AAE ] -
> AAE 1
SAP Web Dispatcher [ For AAE ] -
> AAE 2
The SAP Web Dispatcher, Application Server and AAEs are hosted on separate servers with different IP Addresses.
I would appreciate if somebody can clarify if outbound messages from PI are sent out through the SAP Web Dispatcher or the Application Servers / AAEs?
We now need to open firewall requests to be able to communicate with external servers:
So my question is do we have to request the firewall to be opened between the SAP Web Dispatcher and the External system?
or
Between all of the application servers, and AAEs and the external system?
Is the Web dispatcher used ONLY for receiving messages or for BOTH sending and receiving ?
I have briefly run through the documentation for SAP Web Dispatcher at the [SAP Library|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/42/5cfd3b0e59774ee10000000a114084/frameset.htm].
The BASIS consultant ran a test and confirmed that the messages were being sent out both the application servers and the web dispatcher. So we ended up opening firewall for Outbound messages from PI for Web Dispatcher and the application servers.

A Web Dispatcher is used to receive the messages from Web Applications and then distribute them accordingly to the free resources of WEB AS...if there are no free resources available then the requests are stored in the Dispatcher Queue.....in simple terms it does load balancing
