Errors relaying email

Hi

I am currently investigating an issue we have in our production SAP environment relaying email through SMTP.

Background information:

1) We have configured SMTP relay on our Exchange server for the IP addresses of our SAP instances;

2) We have configured SMTP using transaction SCOT in our ECC environment. The mail host and port have been defined, and we have set a "*" against the address area for Internet address types; and

3) We have scheduled the send job to run every 15 minutes.

The problem:

1) When the send job runs, not all messages are transmitted successfully. Some messages fail with the error code 802:

No delivery to xxxxx@xxxx, as recipient unknown

(email address above removed)

2) However, in transaction SOST, we can select the messages that fail, click the Repeat Send button on the application toolbar, then press the Start Send for Selection button to re-send the failed messages. Generally, the messages will then send successfully, but some times they fail again. We then repeat these steps until all messages are sent.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? It seems strange that a message can fail, however you can re-send and the message is successful - although no parameters have been changed. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi,

As per best of my knowledge, it is not a SAP related issue, but your exchange server or may be network related.

Error code 802 occurs at mail server end, when either reciepents domain is not exists (or reciepents domain MX record is not resolving) or reciepents domain not reachable.

If your SAP server is not on the same network as your mail server resides, try to get the help of Mail Administrator to add your SAP servers network as trusted network on mail server.

In short you can resolve this issue with the help of Exchange Administrator....

Thanks Rajesh.

We have configured SMTP relay on our Exchange server for our SAP instances, and some messages send correctly. Perhaps it is, as you have said, an issue with the domain being unreachable at the time of the send request; as subsequent repeat sends tend to work.

It's just strange that it's so intermittent!

Hi Jamesh,

as you have said, an issue with the domain being unreachable at the time of the send request; as subsequent repeat sends tend to work

As you said repeat send mail succesful deliver. To debug such a case, you can follow below steps.

1. Check when the mail get fail.

2. Retrigger mail from SOST and on other hand inform exchange server team to check whether they get hit on mail server when you retrigger the mail send.

3. IF they get hit on the mail server and mail get bounce from there it mean it is not problem of SAP. IT could be the problem with mail id or anything else ( then in this case mail server team need to check where is the exact problem )

4. If the Hit does'nt get on the mail server then we have to work on SAP for problem.

But, i thing it is problem which is not related to SAP.

Thanks

Ani;
