Message Server and Application Server

Hi Experts,

Can anyone explain me what's the difference between Message Server and Application Server.

Message Server option is available only for RFC receiver channel that too under Load Balancing Parameter.

Also, in SLD we need to maintain the same server..

Is it related to Clustering of nodes for load balancing?

What if our scenario is not using RFC Channel?? Why only in case of RFCs this paramater(Load Balancing) has been introduced?

Please suggest.

Regards,

Sushama

Hi,

The message server is responsible for communication between the application servers. It passes requests from one application server to another within the system. It also contains information about application server groups and the current load balancing within them. It uses this information to choose an appropriate server when a user logs onto the system.

An SAP System consisting of any number of application servers contains precisely one message server. The message server has the following tasks:

1.Decides which server a user logs on to.

2.Handles communication between the application servers, for example, transport of update requests and lock requests.

Pinangshuk.
