Technically it's not necessary to upgrade - but you will be unsupported if you connect Java systems to the non-unicode SAP (e. g. a Portal).

Use the upgrade documentation at

http://service.sap.com/instguides

--> SAP Business Suite Applications

--> SAP ERP

--> SAP ERP 6.0

---> Upgrade

Hello Markus,

I am very surprised by this information and a bit worried because we are currently installing an EP 7 connected to a non unicode ECC6 EHP 4 system. Technically it works great.

Do you, please, have a source for this support problem ?

Some of the issues are listed here:

Note 975768 - Deprecation of Java features with non-Unicode Backend

<...>
As reliability of connection between Java and non-Unicode
backend cannot be ensured, usage of Java features with
non-Unicode backend has been deprecated.
<...>

So technically it might work but it's not supported.

Dear Pramod,

SAP recommends you to definitely go to Unicode, because as discussed above there are quite necessity of having a unicode system.

If you performing a Upgrade now the you can easily opt for Combine Upgrade and Unicode Conversion, the detail information you found in below note.

http://www.service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/928729

It will give u a lot of benefits compared to seperate Upgrade and Unicode Conversion. And you will have a quite supported system from SAP Point of view.

Now think about all above post and decide.

About the Notes you will get the detailed guide with the above note and related documentation listed there in the note.

yes, otherwise you can't confirm the necessary support packages to BIND to the upgrade.

Yes.

You must have a Solution Manager. The first thing is, that you need to generate an upgrade key, the second one is that, you need it to confirm the necessary support packages to bind during the upgrade.
