Hi Murali,

- SAP R/3 MRP does detailed scheduling at Basic level

- In Comparision - PP/DS does detailed scheduling after consideration of complex capacity constraints such as "Set up times", "Sequencing"

- PP/DS provides different Heuristics to plan various scenarios - We have used one of them in our project to do shelf life planning.

- It plays important role where Capacity is a scarce constraint.

Use of SNP:

- You can use MRP Maximum till plant level planning.

- What if you have to consider the constraints in your supply chain spanning across Plants.

- SNP has Optimizer - to consider cost constraints

- SNP has CTM - to consider Capacity constraints & ensure quickest delivery of Material Production (W/O Cost considerations)

There are many advantages you can map for use of APO over SAP R/3 MRP. Above explanation provides basic idea though,

Hope it helps.

Hi Hardrick,

Considering APO has many advantages over SAP R/3. Can you breif me different settings needed in SAP R/3 to run APO planning on the material and secondly is it possible to use combination SAP R/3 and SAP APO in planning.

Thanks and regards,

Murali,

Here are the SAP Best practices configuration guides. If you follow these, you can get your APO system up and running.

Connectivity: Getting R/3 to 'talk' to APO

Replication: Setting up the channels whereby R/3 and APO can exchange the appropriate master data and transactional data

Basic Production planning

http://help.sap.com/bp_scmv250/BBLibrary/Documentation/S16_BB_ConfigGuide_EN_DE.doc

Basic Detailed scheduling

http://help.sap.com/bp_scmv250/BBLibrary/Documentation/S18_BB_ConfigGuide_EN_DE.doc

Basic Supply Network Planning

It is possible (actually, some say it is desirable) to plan some products on R/3, and others on APO. For the products you plan in APO, you typically make an entry in the MRP Type field in the material master "X0", which means Externally planned. This entry turns off R/3 planning. The Core Interface then is used to move the appropriate data from R/3 over to APO, where planning is done. APO then transparently sends all planning results back to R/3.

It is not a trivial task to implement a new APO system. If this is a new APO startup, you would be well advised to engage a consulting company to help you through the initial implementation. It will be money well spent.

Hi Tahnks for the details.

Can you tell me how to configure CIF ( Core interface between R/3 and APO)

Murali,

The instructions are in the docs that I referenced. Config is mostly in Connectivity. Building each CIF integration model is detailed in the Replication doc.

Are you unable to open these docs? I have found that if you follow them step-by-step, you will ALWAYS be successful.
