The best solution for defining the customer group for SIS statistics is to define only one value (for example 1: Customer) and to make the field mandatory for all customer groups.
Therefore the field will be updated for all customers and statistic update guaranteed.
IMHO there is no reason not to update a specific customer in the Sales Information System.
