Upgrade from Enterprise 4.7 to ECC 6.0

Hi,

We are planning to upgrade our SAP system from Enterprise 4.7 to ECC 6.0 next year. Here are my questions:

1. Can we still use Frontend GUI on ECC6.0?

2. Is SAP Netweaver required during this upgrade? If yes, does it required a new server? So is NetWeaver replacing SAP BASIS?

Thanks for sharing your opinion and experience.

The Front end GUI need to be updated as part of your ECC upgrade . Plan for the SAPGUI rollout separately

SAP Netweaver is the technical foundation for the ECC system . ECC 6.0 is also refered as ERP 2005 and its a SAP Netweaver based application.

You can perform the upgrade on the same server or on a parallel environment.

However go through a proper sizing phase to understand the resource requirment on the new or existing server. THis is the very first step in an upgrade . SAP provides utility like quicksizer to perform an estimation of the SAPS requirement.

When you upgrade from 4.7 to ECC 6.0 you even have an option to perform an unicode conversion as part of the upgrade ( IF needed) .

Enhancement Package 4.0 is the latest EHP thats available for ECC 6.0 . SO you can think about bundling EHP4.0 along with the upgrade as well.

Go through the UPGRADE Master GUIDES/ installation guides in SMP to gain clear understanding of the upgrade process.

ALso go through the unicode conversion guide available in SMP and then make the decision on the strategy/approach for your Upgrade.

All the best,

Gerard

Thank you for this info. Do we have to deploy NetWeaver along with ECC 6.0 upgrade? We are on Unicode, Oracle 10G. Our DBA suggest we will upgrade the applications first, then deploy NetWeaver on the 2nd phrase? Is that possible? What's the advantage of NetWeaver? We don't use portable features at all. If my problems do not make sense to you, please bear with me. Thanks again.

ECC 6.0 cannot exist without Netweaver . Netweaver is the platform on top of which ECC 6.0 application is installed .

when you upgrade your application to ECC 6.0 , you would be already upgraded to Netweaver platform. So there is nothing like Upgrading netweaver in the 2nd phase ..

SAP netweaver is the new platform created by SAP and is the fundamental platform for SAP applications after R/3 and since Business suite.

You can go to http://www.sap.com/platform/netweaver/index.epx to read about netweaver . There is abundant information available in the service market place as well.

In short , You cannot exist without netweaver if you wanna upgrade to ECC 6.0 . SAP provides upgrade utility (SAPup) which is can peform the upgrade from you .

Since you are already in unicode you dont need to worry about unicode conversion .

Hope it helps .
