Hello all,

I'm looking for help concerning enterprise carbon impact.

There is a lot of international meeting, green concepts such as carbon impact, diagnosis and so on but how those all these things works in real concrete world ? Is there any know concrete formula to calculate green impact of a firm on environment ?

What are the key indicators ? How do we use it on a daily basis ? De they consider all firm impact of environment or just C02. Are other gaz included ?

What are standard to proceed such a calcul on all the extended supply chain including suppliers, customers, and delegate transports ? If you include the supplliers impacts, how do you proceed while aggregating data for all an industrial sector ?

IS there such calculus in SAP Carbon Impact ? IS there equivalent of help.Sap.com for SAP Carbon Impact ?

Thanks for help

regards

Morgan

Hello Morgan,

I can answer a few of the questions that you have asked.

There is a lot of international meeting, green concepts such as carbon impact, diagnosis and so on but how those all these things works in real concrete world ?

Many companies already report on their Sustainability initiatives through CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Reports. These reports generally include their People practices, Environmental Impact and their Social service practices if any.

Even SAP published its Sustainability report which you can read in detail at the following URL Link: http://www.sapsustainabilityreport.com/performance/index.html

Is there any know concrete formula to calculate green impact of a firm on environment ?

There are a lot of ways in which firms have to account for their Environmental Impact. Carbon emissions are divided into Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. The "Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative" has setup Standards for Companies to report on their emissions. You can find more details about the standards at the following URL Link: http://www.ghgprotocol.org/standards

What are the key indicators ?

Most companies use the Greenhouse Gas Protocol to report on their carbon emissions. For the entire CSR report many companies use the GRI G3 Guidelines. You can read more about the guidelines here Link: http://www.globalreporting.org/ReportingFramework/G3Guidelines/ and you can read SAP's report based on the GRI Guidelines here Link: http://www.sapsustainabilityreport.com/griIndex/

De they consider all firm impact of environment or just C02. Are other gaz included ?

Other impact like Solid Waste Generated, Water Consumption is also reported. CO2 is a Greenhouse Gas. Most companies report on their Greenhouse Gas Emissions, so other Greenhouse gases are also included.

What are standard to proceed such a calcul on all the extended supply chain including suppliers, customers, and delegate transports ? If you include the supplliers impacts, how do you proceed while aggregating data for all an industrial sector ?

Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions are indirect emission sources and when you report them, you have to account for your supplier's emissions as well. So they cover your extended supply chain. Most companies need to do a Life cycle Assessment (LCA) of their products. You can read more about LCA here Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_cycle_assessment

Hello Morgan,

I had asked an unrelated question on the forum in another thread, which was answered by You can read the thread in detail over here -

Just for your convenience, I am quoting here:

Carbon Impact (CI) also helps you measure and monitor your emissions, but the real focus of this solution is on gathering enterprise-wide greenhouse gas emissions across geographies and scopes. For example, CI allows you to capture your direct emissions (Scope 1), your electricity emissions (Scope 2), and your indirect emissions (Scope 3). Scope 3 emissions are also sometimes referred to as supply chain emissions (both upstream and downstream) and can be the most difficult emissions category to capture when creating your enterpriseu2019s carbon inventory. For example, letu2019s say you own a steel mill. The ore that comes into your plant has an associated upstream greenhouse gas emission arising from the mining process and when you ship your final product there are emissions associated with the transport of your product to your customer. Beyond the plant, employee travel is another type of Scope 3 emission. If your company already runs SAP, you will benefit from CIu2019s integration into our Suite that allows you to quickly access your different sources of emissionsu2014be they Scope 1, 2, or 3. One of the advantages of CIu2019s on demand delivery model is that SAP maintains updated emission factors for various materials and activities from various authoritative sources including the EPA and GHG Protocol; with this prepackaged content you no longer need to do the work of tracking down the correct emission factor and making sure it is up to date. In addition to calculating your enterprise carbon footprint, CI also gives you the tools to evaluate different abatement projects to reduce your overall environmental impact. CI also provides reporting capabilities to help with the voluntary reporting processes associated with, for example, the Global Reporting Initiative or the Carbon Disclosure Project

I hope this solves your question about SAP Carbon Impact as well.

Hello Morgan,

Once a organization identifies its Carbon Impact based on guidance / Meetings - then it aims at its reduction by setting Carbon Footprint reduction goals . These reductions can in turn be based on reduciton of their electricity consumption, changing to green buildings, Changes in IT operational activity or even by corporate Go Green initiatives.

Carbon Impact is usually measured as Carbon Foot Print normalized to built up area based standard guidelines like World Resources Institute. For reduction of emissions company can use their day to day fuel consumption, electricity consumption, employee travels or other defined measures to track the emissions and get validation of its Corporate GHG emissions as per ISO 14064 - Organizaitonal GHG Emissions.

if it is only GHG emissions standard reduction targets can be established. If it involves Environmental / social reductions for overall Sustainability then additional guidance based GRI G3 or AA1000 can be used as mentioned by Mr.Girish.

For calculation of emissions from Supply Chain there are couple guidance documents like Draft WRI Product and Supply Chain GHG emisions or PAS2050. Aggregation method either based organizational/ operational or Financial control is based on standard guidance as per ISO 14064 or other applicable guidance.

Yes in SAP Carbon Iimpact - it is possible to calculate emissions based on Orgnaizaiton, Opertional or Equity for GHG Calcuations, Set baselines, targets and track them using the predefined Dashboards for day to day checks.

Hello,

I am part of the SAP Carbon Impact Solution Management team. The answers above are very detailed and accurate. I would like to add a couple of thoughts.

Although today we call the product 'carbon impact,' other environmental factors such as water consumption ,waste to landfill, recycling efforts, etc can be tracked in the application. In the future, we will be creating enhancements wtih a focus on energy management for buildings and product footprint capabilities.

Kind Regards,

Erin

Hi Eric

Could you please release the note for us. Also I wantes to ask you if there is a link to installation guides/help files to SAP Carbon Impact v5.0 anywhere ? If yes, then it would be great if you could share it with us
