If you want to make for some customers i dont know but if you want to make all customers make the sales doc type mandatory for reference by contract have a contract valid for every 3 months only. You can control the valid dates for 3 months by doing configuration settings in your contract doc ument type.
And make the field in display mode using the help of Abaper....
product allocation is definitely an option. it will give you more restrictive controls that contracts cannot give. the downside is that product allocation can be difficult to maintain. it may also affect how sales for other customers are created, not to mention the possible effect on system resources.
but if you want simplicity, the contract would be the way to go. you have the option of creating a sales order type where referencing a contract is mandatory. you then process sales for the affected customers using this sales order type.
