ERP 6.0 on Windows 2008 Release 1 - Oracle 10g

Hi

We are evaluating upgrading our R/3 4.7 (Windows 2003) to ERP 6.0 with Oracle on Windows 2008 R1. Meanwhile, Microsoft released Windows 2008 R2 on Oct.22 and SAP yet to certify the same.

SAP are planning to release new SAP Kernel/Software at the end of first quarter of 2010 for Windows 2008 R2, as Windows 2008 R1 and Windows 2008 R2 use different Windows kernel versions (SAP Note 1383873).

We have to complete our upgrade by April, 2010, so we have no option but to go ahead with Windows 2008 R1 or continue on Windows 2003 until Windows 2008 R2 software is released by SAP.

Does anyone using ERP 6.0 with Windows 2008 R1? Would appreciate any feedback/experiences on ERP 6.0 (Oracle 10g) with Windows 2008 R1.

Regards

Windows 2008 (R1) was released quite some time ago and is stable. For CRM 7.0 implementation you can't even use Windows 2003 but you MUST use Windows 2008.

The question is: Why do you want to use R2? Any features in it that you need for the SAP application?

If not, then I'd simply use R1 since that is released, working and certified with Oracle 10g since january ()

Just make sure you use the new DVD (10.2.0.4) to install the database server, not the original one (10.2.0.1) which will not work.

Hi Markus,

We just want to identify any major issues/bugs for Windows 2008 R1 for ERP 6.0, as Microsoft released new Windows kernel for 2008 R2 and SAP is also treating it as another operating system as per OSS note mentioned in my original post. If so, we like to continue with Windows 2003 and wait for 2008 R2. Mictosoft retained same kernel for Windows 2003 R1 & R2, hence SAP kernel certified for both.

No specific reason for Windows 2008 R2. We want to take right decision on O/S as we upgrade OS and ERP once in 5 years. We are also in touch with our hardware partners as well.

I am aware of recommendation of Win 2008 for CRM 7.0.

We are already on 10.2.0.4.

Further, SAP certification of Windows 2008 R2 is subject to db vendor releasing software and certifying it. Oracle has published plans for 11g on Windows 2008 R2 and don't see any plans for 10g. I am still checking with Oracle on this.

Just wondering whether you have any bad experiences with Windows 2008 R1 and SAP suggested Windows 2008 R2 as a fix etc.

So even if the certification would be done by april, would you really dare to put a production system on such a new OS? Even if certified by SAP, database and your hardware vendor? I'd consider that risk MUCH higher than using an OS that is released for more than a year.

Yes - what I meant was, that if you install an Oracle database you need to use a different DVD set (with patch for 10.2.0.4 included) as opposed to the old 10.2.0.1 DVD.

If there would be any big issues running on R1 they would have been published . So far I haven't seen any major bugs or problems; for us Windows 2008 R1 proved rock solid, both virtualized and on bare metal.

As explained, our options are Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 R1. We have already ruled out 2008 R2. We might consider continuing Win 2003 if there are so many known issues in 2008 R1 and migrate to 2008 r2 in 2011. Having said that we are leaning towards 2008 R1 given the fact that 2003 is supported only until July 2010.

Does SAP Supply single Oracle DVD with 10.2.0.4 included in it. We have recently migrated our CRM & BW system using 10.2 DBD for install and apply 10.2.0.4 patch later as described in OSS note. These DVDs are supplied by SAP middle of last year. We have also ordered latest Oracle DVDs yesterday.

Thanks for the info on Windows 2008 R1.

Got it!!

Sorry, we did migrations on Windows 2003 not on Windows 2008.

Already checked 1303262 which describes that we have to install Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 and separate DVD is available for the same.

end of first quarter 12010 means up to march 31st 2010... and your upgrade is April 2010. this does not leave you enough time to test this out. and if SAP postpones that date?

for now, stick with Windows 2003 but use the 64-bit version.

Eric,

As part of upgrade, we are also migrating to windows 2003 64 bit. Two reasons for not considering Windows 2008 R2:

1) Testing of QA system starts in Jan.10 and it is not possible to test again in limited time.

2) Most important one is, we are not sure of the stability of newly released software i.e Kernel for 2008 R2. Might end up the first company to implement on 2008 R2.

Why do you recommend Windows 2003 over Windows 2008 R1? Mainstream support of Windows 2003 is retired in July.2010.

We are also concerned of the fact that windows kernel for Windows 2008 R1 and Windows 2008 R2 is different, which might suggest lot of bugs in Windows 2008 R1.
