Go through the below document. It will give you more clarity about packing in SAP.

Let's say you're shipping six items to a customer. All six of the same item - maybe a bottle of something.
You'd be dealing with several materials, possibly:
1) FERT - you'd have a material number for the filled bottle. Material 1000000, let's say. 6 ea of those.
2) VERP - you might put that bottle in a cardboard box. You'll need six of those boxes. The boxes are the packaging materials.
3) VERP again - you might put those six boxes into a larger box, all nicely packed together. Another packaging material.
The packaging materials are the items in your inventory that are used for packaging up items.
An Empty Carton is a packing material
A carton packed with material is a Unit of Measure.
Note:
i do not know SAP i am speaking business that is all
I believe, this is just a simple business terminology...
Thanks,
Ravi

thank you for your reply
can you correct me if my example is wright or wrong...
Non-stock material example - Buy lamps for office ,pens, papers for employees etc...
so no need to monitor inventory .
Finished product: is produced internally (owned factory) and ready for sell.
Packaging material - i think so this is for special items of example ( Nido with small cub)
thanx

It all depends on the client demand. Normally in a manufacturing industry, cotton waste, paints in smaller boxes etc., and of course as you said pens can be treated as non stock material.
Your comments on Finished product is okay.
Cartons can be considered as packaging material.
thanks

a) HAWA
Wherever materials are procured externally and sold, they should be treated as Hawa
b) NLAG
If you dont want to monitor inventory for any material, you can treat this material as NLAG
c) FERT
This will always be salable material.
d) VERP
If you want to inventorise packaging materials, then you can have these materials as VERP
e) DIEN
Here there will be no delivery document generated. DIEN is typically used for sale of service which means, billing will be against sale order
thanks
