Hello,
We are facing problem in EHP4 installation.
Error:
START OF PHASE PREP_INIT/VALCHK_INI
SEVERE ERROR: SAP_ABA is in an undefined state,
that is not safe to be upgraded !!!
Reason: Upgrade wasn't completed.
Call the SAP Support!!!
- "continue"
- "cancel"
Enter one of these options [continue] := continue
ERROR: Component 'SAP_ABA'' is in an undefined state 'Upgrade wasn't completed' - maybe upgrade was not reset?
We realized the problem was caused due to termination of EHPI gui(Staging server reboot).
Now as we trying to start it again we are facing above issus.
We reffered note:Note 1251735 - Add. Info. - SAP Enhancement Package Installer (7.10/5)
**************************************************************************************************************************************************
Phase: VALCHK_INI
Description: In this phase, an error can occur when you have incorrectly tried to reset the enhancement package installation. For example, you have not used the "Back" button on the GUI or the "Reset Installation" command from the menu bar. Instead, you have just aborted SAPehpi and deleted the installation directory. This results in an inconistent state in the system and a failure in phase VALCHK_INI when you start the installation program again.
If you were in one of the preparation roadmap steps when you tried to reset the installation, proceed as follows:
Procedure for UNIX and Windows:
1. Change to the EHPI/abap/bin directory (Windows: EHPI\abap\bin)
2. Enter the following command:
./SAPehpi reset prepare (Windows: .\SAPehpi. exe reset prepare)
3. Delete the EHPI directory.
4. Start SAPehpi again.
Procedure for IBM i:
1. Start Qshell by entering the command QSH.
2. Enter the following commands:
cd /EHPI/abap/bin
export LIBPATH=.
./SAPehpi reset prepare
3. Delete the EHPI directory.
4. Start SAPehpi again.
If you already had reached the Preprocessing roadmap step, then contact SAP Support.
************************************************************************************************************************************************
As suggested we raised the OSS Message but i guess SAP is taking time to solve their mess.
Due to urgency, we appreciate your inputs.

Prasad
Hi All,

Srinivas, your issue is probably due to the fact that the last upgrade was not reset properly....
This error occurs if the previous upgrade reset was not done properly. Only deleting upgrade directory will not reset the upgrade. There are many processes needs to be completed in background. You need to stop the current upgrade and reset the upgrade as per upgrade guide and then start the upgrade from scratch with latest SUM tool.
If this doesn't work then you need to refresh your DB and start from scratch.
Sorry for the bad news.
Regards,
Yannick C.
PS. You should open a new thread rather then bump a 3 year old thread, this will insure that all this great info remains legible!
similar issue encountered for me, below note might help!
1790486 - SAP_ABA is in an undefined state that is not safe to be upgraded
We ran into the same problem with the EHP4 Stack 08 upgrade and found that we needed to process the 'reset prepare' twice and also cycled the SAP instance. That got us past the issue.

Hi,
Had this the other day on Windows......
you must reset the prepare, delete the whole EHPI directory and unpack the SAPehpi SAR file and start again.....

Hi Prasad,
I do not fully understand, if this happens to you while doing the first EHPI 4 installation, or if you try to cancel it and run into issues after that.
I hope, that you are receiving this issue during the first time. Otherwise, you really did something wrong during the reset.
I would assume, that AVERS shows "interesting" things ...
It contains the field UPDSTATUS and this needs to be on "+" - if this should stay e.g. on "U" or "B", this means, that your last upgrade had some issues in the end ...
I would not recommend, to patch this table without further investigation on that ...
Is SAP_ABA the only issue or do you see there more issues in this table ?

Hi,
Good to hear from you again.
To sum what i indicated earlier is that i tried resetting the installation from GUI t did not allow doing so. Then tried command line as suggested in SNote, removed the EHPI directory started installation but same error it stops on same entry SAP_ABA.
Table AVERS contains 2 entires namely:
SAP_ABA 700 701 12.06.2008 09:20:15 12.06.2008 09:20:15 + W SAPK-701DHINSAPABA Dummy entry - !do not remove!
SAP_ABA 701 12.06.2008 09:20:15 13.06.2008 11:53:47 + W SAPK-701DHINSAPABA Cross-Application Component.
Regards,
Prasad
Hi Prasad,
ok, so obviously, your reset did NOT work properly, as you still do have 2 lines in there ... please check another system - you will find one line only ... (but I do not recommmend here to remove the 701 line)

Hi Volker,
I dont think the issue is due to the two lines mentioned below of table AVERS.
We started similar installation without interruption on other system both the system has similar entries for SAP_ABA & SAP_BASIS.
SAP_ABA 700 701 12.06.2008 09:20:15 12.06.2008 09:20:15 + W SAPK-701DHINSAPABA Dummy entry -
SAP_ABA 701 12.06.2008 09:20:15 13.06.2008 11:53:47 + W SAPK-701DHINSAPABA Cross-Application Component.
I guess need to dig for other problem.
