BPM ? proxy server?

Can some one help me why BPM and proxy servers are needed in integration process with a example why these needs to be used.

Hi

These are two diffenent Tools in SAP XI where Proxy we will write ABAP CODE and Java Code. where BPM is called cross-component BPM.
