Why doesn't the SAPGUI remember the last client I used?

Whenever I log on, it shows me the system's default client.

Why doesn't it show me the last client I used for that system? Isn't my recent history more contextual than the sysadmin's choice?

Is there a way to do this already?

Because login client has been define into profile parameter login/system_client = XXX . So whenever you try to login into system it reads the client from there. You have to create a shortcut in GUI menu to login into specific client.

Hi Subhash

No, I already understand that the sysadmin has set a default client.

His preferences have nothing to do with me. My GUI should be able to remember my last action per system. GUIs should be contextual.

I am asking why it doesn't - I guess I am not expecting a helpful answer, but hopefully I can influence a future version.

Thanks anyway.

Hello,

you can automatically overwrite the client by using SAP Shortcuts in SAP GUI for Windows or the "Logon" tab in "new connection" dialog in SAP GUI for Java.

Hi

Yes, I know. There are lots of ways you can set the client, including just typing it in.

I am wondering why it doesn't remember the last client I used.

Thanks

You are not trying to understand that Gui cannot identify the client, beucase when you click on log on tab is just tring to connect the server and opened the login screen, and on that screen the client value comes from the profile parameter, so how does the gui will remember the client information.

Hi Subhash

Are you saying it is technically impossible for the GUI to make an entry in the client field for me, overriding the server setting?

It does exactly that if you use a shortcut, as others have pointed out, so I doubt that what you are saying is accurate.

Why could it not use the local database of previous entries as a source instead of a shortcut parameter, just for that dynpro/field?

Cheers

Hello,

there are two reasons, why input history can not automatically fill in your last client number.

1. Input history is for storing previous entries to let the user choose from, not for automatically filling in the last entry.

2. The key for storing entries is the dynpro field name and is independent from the connection. Thus there is no relation between a specific connection and entered client numbers for that.

Hi Rolf-Martin

Well, I think they are technical reasons why it does not do it today. I don't want to propose a technical solution, I was just pointing out to Subash that the GUI does have the power to remember local preferences.

However, I think it would be good if it did it one day. User interfaces need to support the user contextually, and this is one place I see every day that the GUI is not supporting me, even though there is no technical constraint.

Cheers
