Hi,
I am attempting to install NW04s SP4 developer workplace with MaxDB on Windows XP SP2.
I have tried on 2 different machines (laptop and workstation) and on both, the install gets to step 15, database instance creation, and stops. The last entry in the SAPinst.log is "File sapdb.inf does exist. Will use commands in file sapdb.inf." When it gets to here, it occupies one cpu continuously for as long as I let it run (1 day).
Any ideas?
thanks
Nick
Hello Nick,
I saw that you already opened the OSS message 558872/2006 with the same question on queue BC-DB-SDB.
According your information the database software were deleted manually, but the database registry information left on the server.
Please don't delete the MAXDB software manually next time to avoid this problem.
Please keep in mind, to use the sdbuninst tool ( as pro SAP note 599129 ), when you would like to uninstall the database software.
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina

Thanks for your response, and my apologies for giving incomplete or misleading information.
Actually, the history of my installs/uninstalls goes something like this:
1. Uninstalled NW04 using SAPinst program, taking the option to uninstall the database (MaxDB) in the SAPinst program. The uninstall was apparently successful (log said success, and ALL the files were deleted except for the one pid file which I deleted manually).
2. Numerous partial installs/uninstalls of NW04s. I say partial because the installs all halted at step 15 (create database instance). The uninstalls have been failing if I selected the option to remove the database as part of the SAPinst uninstall. So I have been trying uninstalling the database using the sdbuninst program, as well as Windows add/remove programs. Both methods seem to work (they say success and the files seem to be deleted, except sometimes the pid file is left).
From responses to my message in OSS 558872/2006, it seems that the installation is not complete (not all files are created). Maybe the infinite loop is triggered by this error condition. I wonder if I can find out what the necessary files are for the db install.
Other suggestions?
Thanks
Nick
Hello Nick,
-> Could youplease send me the XCMDOUT.LOG file.(n.khlopina@sap.com)
For the analysis of this error it will be helpful to review the files:
- knldiag, knldiag.err
- dbm.prt
( Did you see any errors? )
Please also provide additional information:
-> What outputs you will get when you will run the following commands on the database server:
dbmcli -s inst_enum
dbmcli -s db_enum
dbmcli -s dbm_version
sdbregview -l
-> What are the results at the end of 'sdbverify' run?
Please run 'sdbverify > sdbverify.txt' & send me the sdbverify.txt file.
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina
Hello Nick,
After checking the sdbuninst log file, you sent by e-mail &
Discussion by e-mail of your problem, you wrote in your last e-mail:
"
Unknown to me, my user on this machine isn't a member of have
administrators group. Permissions on SAP DBTech are for Administrators,
so I think that explains why my uninstall hasn't been working properly.
I am fixing that now.
"
Yes, you need to be 'Administrator' to run the install or uninstall
Of the database software/instance.
Please let me know, if you have further questions/problems on this issue.
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina
Thanks, I have successfully installed, although the uninstall didn't quite go as I expected. Some details are:
I logged in as local administrator, and ran the uninstall again. It still didn't work, so I ran sdbuninst, again logged in as local administrator. I checked the sdbuninst log file, and it still could not remove the registry entries.
So I ran the clean.exe that was attached to note 0000572836 Deleting the SAP DB Registry and service entries, rebooted, and then tried the install again. Finally it worked!
Thanks again.
Nick
