Support Pack - SAP Enterprise Portal - "backup image"

Hi SAP Guru,

Support Pack SP19 of SAP enterprise is going to update in our SAP EP 6.

We have refered the SAP Note 1033019 - Central Note - Patch 1 for NW04 Portal

SP19.

In this note it is written as

"It is recommended to create a backup image of the server running EP 6.0

before installing a patch."

Exactly what does this "backup image" means?

Hi,

It is always recommended that before applying the Support Pack you should have the offline backup...

Thanks,

exacly I want to know what does this "image backup" mentioned in the SAP Note 1033019 - Central Note - Patch 1 for NW04 Portal

SP19.

I have a debate with client that "image backup" means

It is a backup of image of whole system ( os+all file system including sap) like GHOST Software.

am i right??

I have tried to explain that it simply means a backup - SAP can't tell you what software to use to backup your portal... (ie GHOST)... basically youre taking the sentence literarily while I think you should focus on the fact that you need to take a backup as a precaution.

Anyhow, Good luck

Dear Juan,

I have taken the sentence iterarily, becuase

Export of JAVA/DB, file sytem backup of SAP, full offline backup of DB are not come under "backup image".

Each types of backup has their own merits and limitations. I heard that image backup is different from Export of JAVA/DB, file sytem backup of SAP, full offline backup of DB.

We understood that "backup image" means

it is like a snapshot type backup or like a image backup using eg: Norton

Ghost software which will contain a disk image of a single file which

contains the complete contents of OS as well as DB & SAP.

We have informed to our client that,

apart from export of JAVA, full offline backup of DB and full file

system backup SAP has recommended in the note# 1033019 that

Customer should take the "backup imageu201D of the whole system which

includes sap file systems.

Our system is based on AIX and file system is located in SAN.

In nutshell, I want to know that u201Cbackup imageu201D which SAP reccomendation

in the note is --

u201Cbackup imageu201D is apart from JAVA/DB export, full offline backup of DB

and full file system backup of SAP. It is a full image of SAP Portal

System which will contains OS, DB and SAP File System.

You can open a message to SAP asking for clarification but to be fairly honest with you having a backup should be more than enough.... From my point of view Its just simply a precaution, Installing a Support Pack should be a routine procedure.

Simply a backup... in case it goes bananas and you need to restore. 😄

You can also do an export as per the Homogeneous system copy guide

That an option i guess... but I think that sentence goes in a take a system backup as precaution context.

The way you take a backup of your portal is your prerogative

Hi, you can take back up using sapinst under software lifecycle , export option , specify your DB and select Java.

Hope it helps.
