Thank you all for your help!
Parameter LOG_ARCHIVE_START is set as true in the system , but when I checked at the OS level , the database was in noarchive mode.
I understood from the notes that the redo logs are not generated in this mode.
I believe that the system has previous logs that were not backed up earlier.
I have taken the offline backup of the system and will discuss it with my seniors to put the database back to archive mode so that it is possible to take the online backup.
Even when I took the offline backup the previous redo logs were not saved and deleted from the system?
This is how it works or the redo should be saved and deleted during the offline backup?
Thanks once again for all of you help!!

Hi,

If your system in no arcive mode, there should not be any new arechivelog. Please verify in oraarch..check date when they got created.

Your offline backup is of no use if still databse is running in no archive mode ..you can not perform full recovery as you do not have redos after backup.

When you perform offlibe databse backup, it will only take backup of datafiles, in offline mode. So it never backups redos..Redos r never deleted by running databse backup. You need to run archive log backup for this.
Also, if you have offline backup and redos of older date, you can safely clean them. Please check with your seniors..

Thanks Ashish

I checked oraarch directory and the last time redo logs were generated was in march.
I have one more question..I was running archive log backup with offline backup but still archive failed

So what I understood is that no matter if you run your archive with offline or online backup it will fail if your database is in no archive mode.
Hope i"m right.
Hi,
I checked oraarch directory and the last time redo logs were generated was in march.
So its clear now, new redos r not getting generated. And now u have to decide if you really need to keep these older files in oraarch ..if yes why ?
Yes, If you are running in no archive log mode, your archivelog backup and online databse backup will fail. However you can take offline back.. please run db in archive log mode only if not business requirement.
Once in archiving mode, immediately take a full consistent backup with regular archivelog backup.

Hi,
If your DB is running in no archive mode, how can new archive logs are accumulating .. please check there should not be any new off line redo log file in /oracle/SID/oraarch. If you have quite old log files, you can clean them as they are not useful for you as you are already running system in no archive mode.
I f you are new to SAP/oracle, i would suggest you to use BRTOOLS to change parameters in system. Using brtools also you can eaisly changed to archiving mode for database.
Call BRTOOLS and choose Instance management u2192 Instance
status (confirm twice with continue).
Information about the status of database instance DEV
1 - Instance number (number) ........... 1
2 - Instance thread (thread) ........... 1
3 - Instance status (status) ........... OPEN
4 - Instance start time (start) ........ 2009-10-11 12.14.00
5 - Oracle version (version) ........... 10.2.0.2.0
6 - Database creation time (create) ....
7 - Last resetlogs time (resetlogs) ....
8 - Archivelog mode (archmode) ......... NOARCHIVELOG
9 - Archiver status (archiver) ......... STOPPED
10 - Current redolog sequence (redoseq) . 54
11 - Current redolog SCN (redoscn) ...... 2123
12 - Number of SAP connections (sapcon) . 0
Call BRGUI or BRTOOLS and choose Instance management u2192 Alter
database instance u2192 Set archivelog mode.
Your database instance will be stopped and restarted into mount state, archive log mode will be turned on, and the database will be opened.
