Jack,

SAP provides a central note for optimal J2EE settings specific to your system type (OS/DB). Search service.sap.com/notes for J2EE settings specific to your system.

The patching process is done similar to how the portal is installed using SAPinst. Check the downloads section of service.sap.com. Navigate to the patching section of the system type you are trying to update. You will find the necessary files there. Check the install guides section of this site for patch installation procedures specific to your system type (there are PDFs you can download).

Here is the central note for VM settings for all various systems:

723909

Here is the one for Windows:

716604

General do's and don'ts:

DO'S:

Make a full backup of portal (this should include the filesystem under the usr folder as well as a backup of the database all at the same time so that data is in sync)

Check around in notes for changes that relate to the SP to which you are upgrading. Not sure of a central source on this.

For example I believe that if you are using an IIS proxy, SAP will not longer provide support for issues with the porxy after SP12.

Use the SAFEMODE option with SAPinst, this should speed up the upgrade process.

DON'T:

Do not try to run part of the portal at one SP level and others at another level--make sure you upgrade all componenents (WAS, Portal, KM, DIs, etc.) together.

Do not expect an SP upgrade to fix all of your problems.

Do not expect everything to work perfectly after an SP upgrade.

Warinings:

Some settings make get undone after an SP upgrade. Be on the lookout for any of these (e.g. any standard iviews you directly edited, etc.)

Hope all the info helps. Good luck. Don't forget t oaward points

I do have some questions regarding upgrade/patching in an clustered environment for which I have created a new posting.

Thanks again.

Hi Jack,

You can find document on Portal tuning at

https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/b601a14c-0601-0010-909c-ddc...

Most of this tuning you can do either with Visual Admin tool or config tool. If you don't know the procedure let me know and I will guide you.
