It would be extremely helpful if anybody could give their contribution on this topic. Several questions have been posted on SDN about how to enhance the LIS communication structures. If you have any experience on it, please post some hints.
SAP Note [200317|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/200317] gives some consulting tips for LIS enhancements, but in fact it just provides a list of the enhancements which can be activated using CMOD, and suggests:
For further help in implementing these enhancements or in implementing LIS please contact SAP remote consulting. Details of the remote consulting service are contained in note 84044.

A good starting point is this weblog: [Custom fields and BW extractors : Making a mixed marriage work! (Part-II)|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/1591] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken];.
Even though it's specifically aimed at the purchasing application (and has some formatting issues ;^) it provides valuable information in order to understanding how to implement the user exits.
