Business System and Client

Hi

I checked many treads and still I couldn't get a satisfactory explanation to the difference between Business System and Client. I read in help.sap site that multiple business systems can be assigned to a single technical system and also each numbered client of an SAP system is a Unique Business System ? So are client and business system one ? If so why use it interchangably ? And if many business systems can be assigned to the technical system how do we specify a related Integration Server ? As I understand only one Business System can be assigned Integration server. So if we assign many business systems to one technical system then how can we have related Integration server for all ? I couldn't get a satisfactory explanation to this doubt in any thread in this forum

>>each numbered client of an SAP system is a Unique Business System ?

It could be. But it is not necessary that each client of SAP system is communicating with PI. If it is then there will be one Business System for each client.

>> So are client and business system one ?

No. Client is more substantial category in SAP system. Business system just defines the logical name to these clients if they communicate with PI.

>> If so why use it interchangably ?

Actually they can't be used interchangably always. The only relation is that for each client of SAP system, there could be only one Business system.

>>And if many business systems can be assigned to the technical system how do we specify a related Integration Server ?

For related Integration Server name, you need to select the PI Business system name which would communicate with your business system. For a single SLD scenario you will see PI Dev, Q and Prod business systems.

>> As I understand only one Business System can be assigned Integration server.

Correct. Its a PI Business system.

>> So if we assign many business systems to one technical system then how can we have related Integration server for all ?

For all Business systems of 1 technical system, you need to select the same PI Business system name.

Hi

So can we conclude that Business System is a combination of Client and Technical system. Without any one of them, it cannot exist. This is a unique combination which helps other business systems to identify a particular Business System in a system landscape. Is that understanding correct ?

The actual relation is:

1 Technical system (say SAP R3) system can have many client (say 001, 100) and for each client you have one Business system.

>>Without any one of them, it cannot exist.

Yes, without Technical system, Business system cannot exist. Clients are used only if we are talking about SAP systems.

>> This is a unique combination which helps other business systems to identify a particular Business System in a system landscape.

Business systems are used in PI for identifying individual systems.

For a single SLD scenario you will see PI Dev, Q and Prod business systems.

When you transport it from Dev to the other QAS and Prod, do we have to change the Related Integration Server for the Business System in Dev ? Or it remains the same through out ?

In single SLD case, you will have all the Business systems (For Dev, Q and P) already present in SLD. These systems would have assigned Integration Server as PID, PIQ and PIP respectively.

Hi Madhav,

Suppose you created one technical System in SLD fro SAP R/3.You can create multiple Clients/Logicial Systems for same SAP R/3. How many clinets you defined we can define the same number of bussines systems for SAP R/3. One R/3 system can handle many instances.

We define multiple clients in R/3 Side, the same way we can define multiple bussiness systems for one Technical System.

Hi madhav,

Business systems are nothing but ur logical systems, U can treat them as the logical representations of the Clients in ur SLD.

for eg. Ur R/3 systems can have various clients say 100-Configuration, 200- Development etc. so all dese clients will act as Business systems in ur SLD and only one such client will be assingned as a Integration Server.

U can also go through the below blogs:
