When applying SP I wander if my assumptions are correct. If we skip this phases the dictionary elements is set to those imported with support packages and custom modifications remain in system
You should NEVER skip the SPDD phase when applying support packages.
In worst case, your own additions of Z-fields in SAP standad tables are gone afterwards.

from the sap documentation you should not postpone modifications for dictionary objects, but only for repository objects,
