I was wondering if someone can tell me where I could find the CMS check box to active CMS in XI?

There isn't any checkbox in XI to activate CMS. Assuming you have installed NWDI (NetWeaver Dev Infrstructure) and configured CMS (made changes in exchange profile, etc), then CMS will show up in XI repository and directory as an option when you try to export objects.
