i want to display the following in this form,
Sales Tax Reg Number 12345-34 , with each number in a square. Hope u understand.
It cud be done with nested templates, but i guess u cant have nested templated in smart forms.

Have a template with say(10 columns), once you select <b>Display Frames</b> you will get your boxes.
Now, You have 10 variables which are there in each column of your template.
Populate the variables with digits of Tax Reg number...

You can split the number into its constituent digits and display each digit in a small window.
Check the box option for outline for each window.
You mean each digit in each window ?
